Pope Francis once wrote that,
“We can study the whole history of salvation, we can study the whole of
Theology, but without the Spirit we cannot understand. It is the Spirit that makes
us realize the truth or – in the words of Our Lord – it is the Spirit that makes us
know the voice of Jesus.”

The value that the Holy Spirit has in our daily lives can often be underestimated.
It is unseen, incalculable and there is little or no scientific evidenced to prove its
definite existence. Yet, as Catholics we know that that the Holy Spirit exist
because of the impact that it has on our daily lives. The bible outlines the
numerous works of the Holy Spirit not only through Jesus, but through his
apostles and disciples as well.

Filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel,
knowledge, fortitude, piety and fear of the Lord, Jesus and his disciples were
able to perform many miracles, speak in many different tongues and proclaim the
good news of the Lord.

Now Nicole, it is your turn. Today you have been sealed with the Holy Spirit and
re-confirmed your faith in Christ. When you were a baby, your parents and
Godparents made the decision to raise you as a Catholic, today, you made that
decision for yourself.

Now it may seem a daunting and strenuous task to live the life of a Catholic and
honestly speaking it will be. There will be many that question your faith and your
beliefs. And the media will always have a hand to play in this consistent
separation between state and church.

However, you have already demonstrated that you possess many if not all, the
gifts of the Holy Spirit.

As an alter server and volunteer for the Children’s liturgy at Church, you have
showed piety and deep sense of respect for God and the church
As a student and friend, you have demonstrated counsel and fortitude by
overcoming peer pressure in order to do what is right.

Through your participation in spelling-bees, your education in French emersion
and your love for reading you have shown knowledge and understanding.
Nicole, I have seen you grow from a small baby with no hair to the beautiful,
loving and respectful girl you hare today. Always ready to speak your mind and
defend those you love.  You are hardworking and thoughtful and always ready to
lend a hand to those in need, whether it be to help your neighbor by babysitting
their dog or give me advice on what nail polish design is more fashionable.

Now filled with the Holy Spirit, there is no doubt that you will do amazing things
while continuing to be the amazing girl you are today.
Now there are many more different things I could say as your sponsor and cousin
but I think Dr. Seuzz says it the best so to paraphrase him

Congratulations!

Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself in
any direction you choose. You are who you are
And you know what you know.
And you are the one who'll decide where to go.

You're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!
